Touch System Data Entry Class Syllabus

Objective:  Students will learn how to touch type without looking at the keyboard and become more efficient and accurate with keystroking.  Proper posture and typing techniques will also be taught and reinforced to reduce physical stress, fatigue, and possible long term wrist and back pain. Students will use Micro Type Pro typing software and Learning.com/Easy Tech in conjunction with Century 21 textbooks as well as other typing reinforcement materials.  Students will also learn how to prepare formal reports and business letters in addition to enhancing their Microsoft Word and PowerPoint skills during the semester long class.  Students will become proficient in using the Internet to search educational topics.  Students will be responsible for a 2 page of research during the last six weeks.  Students will use Easy Bib to create their bibliographies for their research papers and other research presentations.  Students will be responsible for creating a 10 slide PowerPoint presentation on a Science topic.  Students will use Google Drive Applications such as Google Docs., Google Slides, and Google Draw.

PROCEDURE:  Students will typically complete a daily warm-up software lesson, and text each day during the 47 min. class. Students will also have timed writing, dictation, and other similar typing activities designed to enhance speed and accuracy.

HOMEWORK:  Homework is minimal unless a student falls behind significantly due to high absences.  Students may check out materials to finish at home and/or attend posted before and after school open library/computer lab opportunities. Students are encouraged to practice at home using correct keystroking techniques and posture.

RULES:  Students are expected to follow computer student code of conduct rules. This is a form signed by parents and students during the registration at the beginning of each school year.  Students are prohibited from using the internet for entertainment purposes such as music or playing non-keyboarding-related games on computers. Students will receive internet privileges based on a curriculum designed for use and projects/assignments.  If any rules are broken, a student will receive one reminder before losing temporary computer privileges and/or receiving detention/office referral assignments. 

GRADING:  

Daily Assignments = Keyboarding Practice Lessons/ Vocabulary / Lessons on hardware & software  use        50%

Quizzes = Timed Writings/Posture & Technique/Projects/ End of Lesson Quizzes                   50%

The final semester grade is determined by 3 six week grading periods and the final exam.
